The Rules of Lexicon
- In Lexicon, you take on the role of a scholar working on a dictionary for a world. You are cranky, opinionated, and prejudiced. You are also forced to collaborate with some self-important narrow-minded peers, the other players.
- A game of Lexicon takes one month. On June 2, the setting is chosen randomly from the list of proposed settings, and starting letters are assigned.
- The last day of the month is reserved for editing the Wiki to correct unintentional spelling/grammar errors, unlink cites that were not written, and other organizational tasks.
- The 26 days before the end of the month are when entries are written. Each player gets a starting letter of the alphabet, and writes an entry for that letter. The next day, you write an entry for the next letter in the alphabet, and so on, wrapping around back to A when you reach Z. Each entry should be 100-200 words in length.
- Each entry must cite (at least) three other entries, one written, two unwritten (exception: on the first day, all cites will be unwritten, and on the last two days, only one cite and no cites respectively will be unwritten). You cannot cite an entry you have written, nor can you write an entry that you have cited earlier. Your phantom cites should start with letters other players haven't written yet (so someone can fill them in).
- If, when you reach a letter, there is an unwritten cite for that letter, you are strongly encouraged to write it (don't worry about another player grabbing it before you do; that's why the letters are staggered).
- Despite the fact that your peers are self-important, narrow-minded dunderheads, they are honest scholars. No matter how strained their interpretations are, their facts are accurate as historical research can make them. All facts they add to the lexicon are true, even if their interpretations of the facts are wrong.
- {* The Rule of X}: On your "X" turn, if there are no phantom cites beginning with the letter X that need to be written, you may write a new entry for any letter of your choosing.
- For June 3, you should write a short biography of your scholar/author. These are not entries in the lexicon, and don't count as a cite, but can be linked to from an entry if you mention the person in it. Likewise, if you sign your entries you can link them back to your name.
- There is no standard format for entries. Whatever style you choose will end up being idiosyncratic to your author, which is a good thing.
- If you are unable to participate for any reason and end up missing a turn, pick up where you left off. Then write entries following the standard format until you are caught up with where you should be.
These are based on the original rules of Lexicon as well as EverWiki Lexicon rules. They may change from game to game as we find out if they work or not.
