June 2007 Lexicon: JonathanBrown

Daniel Walker: We're here at 104 Spruce Street, just half a block from the famous #27. Already you can feel the powerful spiritual forces in this neighborhood, in this very house. I'm here talking with Jonathan Brown, who tells me he's the oldest living resident on Spruce Street. Right, Mr. Brown?

Jonathan Brown: That's right.

DW: How long have you lived here?

JB: Since 1889.

DW: Is that when your grandparents built this house?

JB: I built this house.

DW: I can sense how connected you are to it. Your family's spirits are very connected to it, too, aren't they? Is that why you stayed here when so many of your neighbors have left the neighborhood?

JB: Connected to the neighborhood. That's right. Don't imagine I could leave now.

DW: So, what--

JB: <interrupting> You can stay or you can leave. When they figure that out, most folk who move in move right back out again.

DW: I see. Now--

JB: <interrupting> Now, I told Helen that, may she rest in peace, but she tried to have it both ways. Not me. You come back in a hundred years, I'll still be right here.

DW: Helen Rose? Did you know the Rose Sisters?

JB: I don't know more than anybody else, except that we were neighbors for a while. I never went in for that hippie business.

DW: You must have heard some of the legends about Spruce Street. Have you personally ever experienced anything that you would call more-than-natural?

JB: Well, now, I suppose you'd be talking about the Night Hound.

DW: The Night Hound?

JB: I don't know if it's got a proper name, but I see it sometimes, walking up and down the street, especially the nights after a big storm. It's got four legs, like a dog, but it's no dog, I promise you. It leaves me alone, mostly—I figure it's gotten used to me by now—but you won't catch me outside after midnight, just the same.

DW: <voice-over> Jonathan Brown: a man rooted in the land. Would-be residents frightened off by strange spiritual vibrations. A loyal canine friend searching for its former master. Join us next time on as we delve deeper into the legend surrounding Spruce Street!
